Why Koreans Love Iced Americanos

If you’ve ever spent time in South Korea during the winter, you’ve probably seen something a bit confusing: people walking through literal snowstorms while holding a giant cup of iced coffee. There’s actually a popular phrase for this—Eol-juk-ah—which basically translates to “Even if I freeze to death, iced Americano.” It sounds extreme, but there are some pretty relatable reasons behind the madness.

First off, it’s mostly about survival. Korea has a famously intense work and study culture. When you’re running on four hours of sleep and staring at a screen all day, you don’t necessarily want a cozy, warm drink that makes you feel sleepy. You want a cold, caffeinated shock to the system to keep you moving. It’s less of a treat and more like fuel for the grind.

There’s also a practical side to it. Korean food is delicious, but it can be heavy and savory—think Korean BBQ or spicy stews. After a big meal, a cold Americano works like a palate cleanser. It’s crisp, it cuts through the grease, and many people swear it helps with digestion and getting rid of that morning “puffy face” look.

The social aspect is huge, too. In cities like Seoul, coffee shops are everywhere—sometimes three or four on a single block. Since apartments are often small, the cafe becomes everyone’s living room. It’s where you meet friends, go on dates, or just kill time between meetings. And because a plain iced Americano is usually the cheapest thing on the menu, it’s the most accessible way to hang out without breaking the bank.

Then there’s the health factor. People in Korea tend to be very conscious of fitness and calories. Unlike a latte or a Frappuccino, an Americano is basically just water and espresso. You can drink three of them a day and not worry about the sugar, which makes it the ultimate guilt-free habit.

At the end of the day, it’s just part of the vibe. There is a certain kind of “cool” in walking down the street with a cold drink, even when it’s below freezing. It’s a small, affordable luxury in a fast-paced life. As many locals say, life is already bitter enough—at least the coffee is a bitterness you can enjoy.
